Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine

Department of Physical &Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) performs the activities of clinical rehabilitation medicine and clinical-applied basic rehabilitation science research. This PRM Lab (Dynamic! Rehabilitation Medicine Science and Technology Institute Lab) has deep interests in Neuro-Rehabilitation, Musculoskeletal rehabilitation, Pain rehabilitation, Cardiac rehabilitation, Pulmonary rehabilitation, Pediatric rehabilitation and Geriatric rehabilitation. We have not only general rehabilitative therapeutic rooms of Physical therapy, Exercise therapy, Occupational therapy, and ADLs training but also special laboratory rooms for Neurophysiologic exercise including Electromyogram-Biofeedback training system and RS (rehabilitation system) model of BTE (Baltimore therapeutic equipment) system, Electrodiagnostic Lab I (for electromyographic study and intraoperative monitoring) and Electrodiagnostic Lab II (for evoked potential study and transcranial magnetic stimulation study) for the diagnosis and the management of muscle and nerve diseases, and Digital infrared thermography Lab for the evaluation of neuromusculoskeletal pain and outcome.

Neuro-Rehabilitation deals with the evaluation and management of patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. Our main interests of research rest on neurological recovery with neural reorganization and plasticity, and functional recovery.

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation deals with the evaluation and management of persons with a broad range of muscle and joint problems with back, shoulder, knee, arm or hand pain, and any other musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction caused by trauma, overuse, maladaptive lifestyle or sports activities. Individuals with acute and chronic injuries, muscle imbalance and overuse injuries participate in a comprehensive pain management program aimed at restoring functional capabilities and increasing functional state to return to home and community.

Pain rehabilitation deals with the any pain patients caused by neuromuscular or musculoskeletal pathology, including of cancer pain. The aim of pain rehabilitaation also direct to increasing the functional state and quality of life through various pain-relieving interventions.

Cardiac rehabilitation deals with the functional evaluation and management of patients with cardiovascular disease with the aim of maintaining, restoring and increasing the optimal physical, medical, psychological, emotional, vocational and socioeconomic status of the patients.

Pulmonary rehabilitation deals with the functional evaluation and management of persons with pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, restrictive lung diseases, intrinsic lung diseases and so on with the goal of achieving and maintaining the individual's maximum level of independence and functioning in the community.

Pediatric rehabilitation deals with the functional evaluation and management of pediatric patients with the developmental delay, cerebral palsy, congenital anomalies such as myelomeningocele.

Geriatric rehabilitation focuses on the functional evaluation and management of symptoms and function of aging individuals to prevent, reverse, or minimize disability for the healthy longevity.

Finally, PRM Lab researches the biomedical sciences oriented to rehabilitation medicine and aims to devote to the health and longevity of human. We also contribute to an environment which provides the optimal rehabilitation for the disabled persons who reside in Gwangju city and Jeonnam province cooperated with national and regional rehabilitation centers.
